For new home owners, it’s a good idea to avoid future issues by doing these six things when you move into your new home.

Change the locks and make spare keys. If you are a new home owner, it’s a wise decision to change the locks on your doors when you move into the house. It may seem unnecessary, but you never know who may have a copy of your old keys. Taking this precautionary measure will help prevent burglaries in the future.

Check for plumbing leaks. Most home inspectors will note any plumbing leaks on their reports, but it is in your best interest to double check. If you do notice leaks, fix them (or have them fixed) before they impact your water bill or your home’s structure.

Steam clean carpets. You can rent a steam cleaner and do this yourself, or hire a professional carpet cleaning service to do it for you. Be sure to have your carpet cleaning done when the house is empty and before you move furniture in.

Wipe out your cabinets. Use a non-toxic cleaner to clean the inside and outside of your cabinets. Use this time to replace contact paper, as needed. Be sure to pay attention to what you’re cleaning as this may give you insights into any pest control problems you may need to address.

Hire a pest removal service. Hire a professional pest removal service to take care of any pest issue you may have in your new home.

Locate your circuit breaker box and main water valve. Find your circuit breaker box and label the parts of your home that each breaker is connected to. This will help you in case of emergencies, as will becoming familiar with where your main water valve is located.
