Tips to Cut Summer Air Conditioning Costs
If you’ve been outside lately, you know the summer heat is upon us. Keeping your family cool is important and an air conditioner (AC) can do just that.
Use the following tips to keep your summer AC costs low while staying cool:
Use fans. Ceiling fans make it possible for you to set the AC at a higher temperature while keeping your house cool. Make sure you install ceiling fans in the most-used rooms of your house, if possible.
Spend time in the basement. If you have a finished basement, it is most likely one of the coolest places in your home. On particularly hot days, you may even consider sleeping in the basement to stay cool and maintain the temperature of your AC.
Avoid using the oven. Using the oven will make your home hotter and cause you to have to lower the temperature on your AC. Avoid this dilemma by opting to use the microwave, toaster oven or crockpots instead.
Plant trees or shrubs. Trees and shrubs planted strategically throughout your property can help keep your house cooler while keeping the sun out. Protecting your AC unit from the sun by shielding it with a tree or shrubs will also help protect it and prolong the life of the appliance.
Cover your windows. Using window shades and draperies will help keep the sun and heat out of your house during the day which will allow you to keep your AC at a higher temperature while remaining cool.
Keep your AC unit maintained. Ensure that your AC’s filters and fans are clean to ensure it runs properly.
By using the tips described, you can stay cool while remaining within your budget.
